About
Us
Myers Park High School has a reputation for
academic excellence, innovative courses, and extra-curricular vitality.
It is home to the first Middle Years (IBMYP) program in the United
States and first public International Baccalaureate (IB) program
in North Carolina. These programs complement the many academic;
technical; and visual and performing arts
programs offered by the school. In addition, Myers Park has a highly-motivated
and well-trained staff teaching the IBMYP and IB courses; they see
these programs as natural extensions of the scholastic options offered.
While they pursue a focused program, IB students are nonetheless
considered important and essential members of the entire student
body at Myers Park and are expected to be full participants in all
aspects of student life.
The
MYP and IB curriculums challenge and assist students
to work together to achieve personal excellence and university/college
admission. As a school-within-a school, we are equipped to provide
excellent academic and artistic instruction within one of the
largest high school student populations in North Carolina. We
are small enough to be responsive to parents' wishes and flexible
enough to respect each student as an individual. A talented international
student body from 37 countries fosters the values of international
understanding and global responsibility. Our curriculum develops
compassionate responsible citizens, prepared not only for the
rigors of college but for lives of purpose and personal fulfillment.
-
The
Myers Park IB program is world-renowned for its success
in producing outstanding young adults through a unique
balance of academics, extensive extracurricular activities
and community service.
- One
hundred percent of our graduates pursue post-secondary education
- many with scholarships.
- Distinguishing
features include both the highest SAT average and highest percentage
of students identified in the National Merit Competition in
Mecklenburg County.
- Recent
graduates' admissions include: Brown, Davidson, Duke, Columbia,
Harvard, Northwestern, Princeton, Stanford, Swarthmore, Yale,
University of Chicago, University of North Carolina at Chapel
Hill and University of Virginia.

The
IB Middle Years Program not only encourages
students to pursue an academic and rigorous curriculum, but also
provides a natural progression to the IB Program in grades 11
and 12. It is organized
around three major concepts: Intercultural Awareness, Holistic
Education, and Communication. The program extends the traditional
curriculum to include immersion in the five Areas of Interaction
- approaches to learning, community service, health and social
education, environment, and homo faber (concerned with the products
of the creative genius of people). These pervade and recur throughout
the five years of the MYP, through the eight subject groups, interdisciplinary
teaching and projects, whole school activities, and the Personal
Project. Grades 6, 7, and 8 are completed at Randolph Middle School;
the final two years (grades 9 and 10) are completed at Myers Park.
The
International Baccalaureate Diploma Program is
a course of study that covers the last two years of high school,
and culminates in a series of international examinations in various
subjects. Students
who participate in the full Diploma Program are required to study
and examine in six different academic subjects. They are also
required to fulfill three additional requirements: a critical
thinking class known as Theory of Knowledge, a 4,000 word piece
of original research known as the Extended Essay, and a minimum
of 150 hours of participation in extracurricular activities and
community service known as Creativity, Action, and Service. If
a student satisfies these central requirements and achieves a
cumulative score of 24 points (each exam is graded on a scale
of 1 to 7) on the six exams, he or she is awarded the IB Diploma.
Student may also choose to take three or more individual IB courses
(IB Concentrated Studies) and the subsequent exams; the awarding
of IB Certificates recognizes these students.
Students
willing to devote the time necessary, having the motivation
and self-discipline required, will find the achievement of the
IB Diploma a great satisfaction. It identifies, on an international
standard, a student whose capabilities have been challenged and
one who has proven equal to this challenge.
