International Baccalaureate (IB) Student Council

The IB Student Council is a fun loving group of students working together to enhance the quality of life at Myers Park and in the Charlotte community. Activities are designed to complement classroom and student life experiences by focusing on the behaviors that strengthen students’ personal effectiveness and leadership development. Their motto is “empowering people to change the world.” From cultural festivals and celebrations; from meetings with professionals of various walks of life to meetings with speakers from different cultures of the world; from college admission orientated seminars to subject-specific “lunch and learns”: they promote camaraderie, peer guidance and cultural awareness on campus, and enjoy themselves to the max while keeping academics their top priority.

Students enrolled in the IB program, Diploma or Concentrated Studies, are collectively known as the IB student body. The IB Student Council is their official representative for IB matters. The IB Student Council is divided into three groups- IB Freshman Council, IB Sophomore Council, and IB Student Council for juniors and seniors. The IB Student Council is not a class! Members meet as a large group several times a year. The three Councils also meet separately about once a month. Smaller committees from each council meet as needed. As the program grows each year, the potential for student initiatives to change campus life becomes immeasurable.

The IB Freshman Council is the flagship program for emerging leaders. It is designed to enhance leadership skills and potential; foster interpersonal, social, ethical and moral development; and instill an attitude of social awareness and responsibility. Everyone is welcome- students who are just tapping into their leadership potential or students who want to fine-tune their leadership skills.

The IB Sophomore Council builds on students’ awareness of the self, community dynamics, and leadership roles, and teaches members how to strengthen leadership through community service. Members further develop demonstrated leadership skills and learn through networking with other aspiring leaders from across campus and the Charlotte community.

IB Student Council (grades 11 & 12) is a group of veteran student leaders who want to capitalize on both their co-curricular & prior leadership experiences and seek new ways to put their leadership experiences into words and practice. Their interest in student leadership goes far beyond involvement in clubs and organizations. They have exhibited an interest and talent for high-level leadership that focuses on international and intercultural relations.

The world is a place of great variety, and it needs a variety of great leaders. The IB Student does not discriminate against students on the basis of their race, sex, color, religion, disability, age or national region. Any student who is enrolled in one of the IB programs is eligible to be a member, even if they do not belong to any Myers Park club or student organization. Prior leadership experience is not a prerequisite; commitment and desire are the most important qualifications. Council members are not elected. They usually enter the Council as freshmen. A student who wishes to be a candidate for the Student Council shall: be a good citizen, relate well to other students and adults, be interested in being on the Council, maintain a “minimum” weighted cumulative GPA of 3.0 each quarter, and obey the rules and regulations in the Student Rights, Responsibilities & Character Development Handbook.
