The Initiative Program is designed to engage students in community service, while at the same time appealing to the variety of student interests. Participating students are afforded an opportunity to practice leadership skills, creative ingenuity, and organizational competence. While IB students generally interact in a committee capacity, they are also encouraged to engage the larger student body to achieve success. National Conversation on Climate Change The National Conversation on Climate Change occurred on October 4th. The National Conversation on Climate Change, which was attended by local politicians, businessmen. and scientists around the country, gathered to discuss the current state of our Earth’s changing climate and the steps that we as Americans can take to help ensure the existence of a suitable climate for our future generations. Discovery Place teamed with local schools, including Myers Park, to make Charlotte a key spot for this event. Students and Charlotte business and community leaders attended a panel discussion held at Discovery Place. Many of the Myers Park IB Student Council members, IB and AP Science students, moderated and/or in attendance at this event. March of Dimes The Myers Park High School March of Dimes team is the only school-based March of Dimes support organization in the region. Since its founding in 2003, the team has raised over $22, 000 for the March of Dimes. A student-led initiative, the team works both in the school and in the community to raise both funds and awareness for the fight against prematurity and birth defects. Share the Warmth For the their first semester initiative, the IB Freshman Council chose to do Share the Warmth. Students met for three meetings to make polar fleece blanket throws, and it was a great success! Over sixty throws were made and then distributed by students to the following recipient organizations: Presbyterian Hospital - Pediatric unit, Levine Children's Hospital, and three locations of Room in the Inn for homeless and displaced families. A special thanks is extended to the parents who donated the polar fleece fabric and made arrangements to pick up their students after Council meetings as well as take them to deliver the blankets. This initiative was a great way for the Freshman IB Students to get active, earn CAS hours, and give to the community in which we live. Second Semester Initiatives For Second Semester, students will be splitting up into smaller focus groups based upon students' interests. Some of the issues that the council wishes to tackle are Animal care and rescue, "Going Green at MP", and homeless and displaced families. We're looking forward to a great second semester!
